What type of crane is used in ASRS?

Jul 30 , 2025

Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS) have changed how warehouses operate, especially in large-scale logistics and manufacturing environments. One of the key components in these systems is the crane.

In an ASRS, the primary function of the crane is to handle the movement of goods between storage locations and the input/output points. This is done automatically without human intervention. The crane needs to be both fast and accurate, while operating in narrow aisles and high rack environments. This is where the ASRS crane, often called a stacker crane, comes into play.

A stacker crane system is specifically designed for ASRS environments. It typically runs along a fixed track within the racking system, moving vertically and horizontally to retrieve or store items. These cranes are capable of working at high speeds and can reach impressive heights — making full use of vertical warehouse space. The design is efficient, requiring minimal aisle width, which improves storage density and throughput.

There are several types of stacker cranes, depending on the layout and automation level of the facility:

Single-mast stacker cranes: Commonly used for lighter loads and small to medium storage heights.

Twin-mast stacker cranes: Provide extra stability and are often used for heavier loads or higher racks.

Shuttle-based systems with mini-load cranes: Ideal for high-speed, small-item retrieval, such as in pharmaceutical or electronics warehouses.

All of these fall under the umbrella of automated warehouse cranes, which are engineered to work in sync with warehouse management systems (WMS) for real-time data and inventory control.

The benefits of using an ASRS crane go beyond automation. These systems help reduce human error, improve storage efficiency, and allow 24/7 operation. Since these cranes are automated, they also help improve worker safety by minimizing the need for manual lifting or operating forklifts in tight aisles.

Additionally, stacker cranes can be customized for load type—handling pallets, totes, or bins—and are scalable for future expansion. Their integration with conveyor systems and robotic arms makes them a flexible solution for complex logistics operations.
Applications in Modern Warehouses

Automated warehouse cranes are used in various industries, from food and beverage to retail and automotive. In cold storage, they help maintain strict temperature controls by reducing the need for human presence. In high-volume e-commerce warehouses, ASRS cranes increase order accuracy and shorten delivery times.

Companies that prioritize speed, accuracy, and space efficiency often rely on a stacker crane system to manage thousands of SKUs in a compact area. Whether you are handling pallets or small cartons, there is likely an ASRS crane setup suitable for your operations.
